CREF – Enrico Fermi Research Center, aims to pursue two different but complementary objectives. On the one hand, by virtue of the setting up of a museum dedicated to Fermi’s scientific legacy, to offer a wide dissemination and communication of his life and his discoveries.
On the other hand, CREF has its own scientific activity oriented towards the present and the future, with a nucleus of particularly original and innovative research precisely in the spirit that has characterized the activities of Enrico Fermi.
The Royal Physical Institute of Via Panisperna in Rome was inaugurated in 1881 and here, under the direction of the physicists Pietro Blaserna and Orso Mario Corbino, a real ‘creative environment’ flourished where Enrico Fermi, who took the chair of
Theoretical physics in 1926, he organized and prepared the conditions that led to the birth of that group of young scholars who in the 1930s became famous as the “boys of Via Panisperna”

The Enrico Fermi Research Center (CREF) was founded with a 1999 law but only recently the famous building in Via Panisperna has been completely restored and can be used for its scientific purposes. The idea was to restore the famous building in Via Panisperna to a scientific use that would honor the memory of the fundamental discoveries of the Fermi group that took place in that place. The first element would have been to establish a museum in the building with the original finds of Fermi’s experiments integrated by appropriate modern audio-video systems that would make the understanding of these historical events accessible to the new generations.
At the end of 2019 the “Enrico Fermi” Historical Museum of Physics and Study and Research Center finally came into possession of the historic monumental complex in via Panisperna, completely restored, as the definitive seat for its activities. The complex, inaugurated in 1881, was entirely designed by the Gorizia physicist Pietro Blaserna (1836-1918), who also supervised its total construction, to house the Royal Institute of Physics.
